Solihiya
Solihiya is essentially thin strands of rattan strips that are woven by hand to form sunburst patterns and it is usually woven into a wooden frame. This style of weaving has been done by Filipino weavers since the 19th century and was used mostly in traditional Philippine furniture
My insight in this activity was that it was the hardest activity so far because you have to create a pattern and have to weave it correctly in order to form the sunburst pattern. I had a hard time in weaving the rattan strips into each because it was thick and not maleable enough. My final piece didn't really formed starburst patterns, more like diamond patterns because my squares were big due to the fact that the rattan strips were not maleable enough. Overall it was a great experience as it challeneged me and made me realize that our local weavers do this every day for a living.
